Walking canes are sometimes a necessity to getting around. Whether you are elderly or disabled a walking cane will give you freedom you may not otherwise have. Caring for your walking cane is important for a couple of reasons. Keeping your walking cane and handle clean and cared for will help avert accidents that can further injure you.
A clean walking cane is a good-looking walking cane! With proper care your cane can be not only an aid to mobility it can be an accessory wherever you go. There are basically two types of walking canes, wood and metal. Cleaning both is fairly simple and quick.
Wood Walking Canes: When you get back from an outdoor walk or at least once a week take a few minutes to brush off any dirt/dust from your walking cane. As you brush off your cane pay attention to any loose bits of wood, nicks or scratches. Loose pieces should be removed or may be glued back on. Nicks and scratches can be covered using a black or brown felt tip marker. You may polish your wood cane with regular furniture polish to keep the wood conditioned and looking terrific.
Metal Walking Canes: When you get back from an outdoor walk or at least once a week take a few minutes to brush off any dirt/dust from your walking cane. As you brush or wipe off your cane pay attention to broken bits, nicks and scratches. Broken pieces may include the rubber piece at the bottom of your cane, or a loose handle. Nicks and scratches can be covered using a felt tip pen. Metal canes can then be cleaned using silver polish.
Please replace or fix all broken or loose handles, or other pieces. Not doing this can result in further damage to the cane or to yourself! You will get so much more from your walking cane when you properly care for it.
